Toyo Steel Two-Stage Toolbox

Toyo Steel started making toolboxes in Osaka in 1969, pressing them from a single sheet of steel with no seams to split or rust out. Fifty odd years later the design has barely needed changing, which is the usual sign that someone got it right the first time.

The two-stage layout is the reason this one gets picked over the simpler models. Two upper trays cantilever outward as you open the lids, so everything lifts up and spreads out in front of you instead of hiding under the thing you're looking for. Underneath sits a full depth main compartment for the bigger gear.

Each tray takes removable steel dividers, up to five compartments a side, so you can set it up for whatever you actually keep in there. Fine craft tools, sharpening kit, screws and fittings, or just the everyday hardware that otherwise ends up loose in a drawer.

The lids are hinged independently and the clasp takes a 4.8mm padlock, which is handy if the box lives on a job site or gets thrown in the back of a ute. All steel, no plastic, nothing to snap.

It also just looks good sitting on a bench, which is not the reason to buy one, but it is the reason people end up owning three.
